Saturday Night Live ran this photo before a commercial break - a charming tribute to Maya Rudolph’s mother Minnie Riperton’s 1974 album cover, Perfect Angel.
She slayed Saturday night as host.
Maya’s been my favorite cast member since I was 12. So for over a decade. She’s perfection as Ava on Up All Night and her characters from SNL are unbelievably spot on, incredibly funny. She’s an expert comedienne.
The show was entertainingly …ethnic, well, Black. I enjoyed that aspect too. Amy Poehler as Hillary Clinton singing in The Obama Show. Who doesn’t remember that episode of The Cosbys? And the Blue Ivy Carter sketch! Kristen Wiig as a perennially “overwhelmed and surprised” Taylor Swift.
In honor of Whitney Houston’s sudden passing, SNL displayed respectful restraint, opting not to do a Whitney sketch. Earlier Saturday Whitney Houston’s funeral was held in her hometown of Newark. It was simulcast on major networks. The service was heartfelt and a true homecoming.
As other African American friends on Twitter knowingly commented “Whitney Houston’s funeral is the most unapologetically Black thing ever broadcast on television.”
The secret’s out.
Kudos to CNN and other networks for running it in its entirety. We appreciated it.
[Let Bobby B. be. His “entourage” was his kids. The media need not always villainize him.]
Like mother…like daughter
Loooooove this!!
